A Guide to "Open" and "Closed" Recovery Support Meetings

In the Alcoholics Anonymous (and many other Twelve Step) Traditions, meetings are designated as Open or Closed. It is helpful to understand this distinction to choose a meeting that is right for you.

Open Meetings welcome anyone interested in Alcoholics Anonymous programs of recovery from alcoholism. Nonalcoholics may attend open meetings as observers - but they should reserve active participation in discussion for those alcoholics in attendance.

Closed Meetings are for AA members only - although they welcome those who have a drinking problem and "have a desire to stop drinking."

Generally speaking, discussion at all AA meetings should be focused primarily (and often exclusively) on topics identified by the group and relevant to addiction to alcohol. Other addictions may be discussed in their relevant Twelve Step Tradition meeting or other recovery support group meetings.
